EigenGov is a system of people, products, and processes designed to efficiently steward the EigenLayer ecosystem by progressively decentralizing control of the protocol, tokens, and treasury.
EigenGov is a highly-collaborative network of small, sovereign teams authorized by token holders to make key decisions on behalf of the whole. They can make decisions quickly and adapt their organization as needed.
These teams will operate using three products:
1. Endorsements: empowering the best decision-makers in a peer to peer way 2. Councils: connecting the best decision-makers to the right decisions in a curated way 3. Decisions: making the best decisions with the proper processes in a dynamic way
In other words, token-holders will be able to use their staked EIGEN to endorse contributors based on their trusted alignment and relevant skills. Then, councils composed of trusted experts (ie., endorsed) will make decisions on behalf of the ecosystem. In EigenGov, token holders will be able to use their staked EIGEN to endorse contributors based on their trusted alignment and relevant skill. These endorsements will surface the community’s view of the best decision-makers based on trusted alignment to the protocol and expertise across high value skill sets, who can then be matched to different roles and councils responsible for making domain-specific decisions within the ecosystem.
EigenGov holds these councils accountable with a system of checks and balances that ensures final authority rests in the hands of EIGEN token-holders, who will ultimately have the power to influence council membership, shape new councils, and veto council decisions. At the launch of EigenGov, council members will be appointed by the Foundation. However, council membership will progressively move toward community control, in alignment with our overarching goals of decentralization and efficiency.
When will it work?
Our view is that we are still in the early days of decentralized governance experimentation. EigenGov is designed and implemented with the goals of being efficient, agile, and secure enough that it remains effective decades into the future. To that end, we are following a philosophy of progressive decentralization that we call incubation. We will incubate decentralized structures within the Eigen Foundation allowing EigenGov to test and iterate on new councils and governance designs before they are released and given more autonomy and permanency.
The Protocol Council is the first EigenGov council deployed by the Eigen Foundation. The first iteration of endorsements is expected to launch in Q4.
